Michael is a leading specialist in the field of Minimal Access Surgery. Minimal Access Gynaecological surgery involves both Laparoscopic and Hysteroscopic procedures. The advantages are more precise surgery, less post-operative discomfort, less Hospital time and earlier return to work.
Laparoscopic Surgery:
Laparoscopic surgery involves inserting a telescopic camera through the tummy button (umbilicus) and used to:
- Excise Endometriosis.
- Remove Ovarian Cysts.
- Divide Adhesions.
- Remove Fibroids, surgery being either Myomectomy or Hysterectomy.
- Perform Hysterectomy.
A Laparoscopy Involves:
- A general Anaesthetic (being put to sleep).
- A telescopic camera is inserted through tummy button (umbilicus).
- Removal of conditions (if necessary ) is carried out via small incisions through which small tubular ports are placed to allow instruments to be passed into the abdomen.
- Laparoscopic surgery usually takes between 1-2 hours. Following surgery, you have a small dressing over each incision.
- Most surgeries require 1-2 nights in hospital. At home, you are encouraged to walk and can drive within 5-7 days.
- Normally patients return to work in 10-14 days.
Hysteroscopic Surgery:
Hysteroscopic surgery involves inserting a telescope into the uterus. It enables more precise diagnosis and treatment of women with irregular vaginal bleeding and may be recommended to diagnose and treat the following:
- Endometrial polyps (overgrowth of the lining of the uterus on a stalk).
- Submucous fibroids (small lumps of muscle that can bulge into the cavity).
